I'm selling a Daytona that I miraculously purchased on a trip to Hawaii with my family about 10 years ago! When I went to the official store to buy a Rolex to commemorate my trip, I was told they had a discontinued Daytona model in stock. I immediately persuaded my family to buy it. I'm a first-time luxury watch owner, but I never expected to own a Daytona, and I've only worn this Daytona since then! Daytona's exciting diversity is born from evolution.

The Daytona was born in 1963. After several prototype models, the Daytona became popular as a pioneering racing chronograph. Its movement was the hand-wound Cal. 72 series manufactured by Valjoux, which was used in many other chronographs at the time. However, Rolex had switched to a unique method of adjusting the watch's advance or retreat with a temporary screw rather than a setting pin. The first model was equipped with a free-spring balance, still considered a state-of-the-art mechanism today. After minor modifications, the Cal. 722-1, Cal. 727—the final version of the Cal. 72 series—was installed in the second-generation Daytona.

In addition to its high beat frequency of 6 vibrations per second instead of 5, this watch also featured a Kif-Ultraflex shock absorber. This renowned model continued to power the Daytona until 1988, when production of the hand-wound version was discontinued. The hand-winding Daytona's appearance is quite different from the automatic Daytona, with a choice of stainless steel or plastic bezels, and boasts a unique design and texture that can't be described simply by the word "retro."

Because Rolex Japan has discontinued repair services for hand-winding models, there are concerns about their maintenance, so it's important to ensure after-sales service is available when needed at the time of purchase. However, the joy of owning a hand-winding Daytona still outweighs these concerns! The most popular 3rd generation debuted in 1970. With the introduction of screw-down pushers and the word "OYSTER" on the dial, it boasted the highest specifications of a hand-winding Daytona! Collectors enjoy the diversity resulting from the differences in various details, making it a truly delightful pleasure for collectors to own. In 1988, this model evolved into the Zenith-based Cal.4030, resulting in the El Primero, and with it the Daytona entered the era of automatic winding.

This new model passed chronometer standards and major design changes were made, including the addition of a metal frame to the dial, while the plastic bezel disappeared with the introduction of the automatic winding model. In 2000, the current Daytona was introduced. The Cal. 4130, developed in-house by Rolex, broke new ground in functionality by increasing the watch's power reserve, ease of maintenance, and durability. Since then, the watch has undergone a process of refinement in every detail, including the enlargement of the hands and the refinement of the bracelet. Then, in 2013, a 50th-anniversary Daytona model was launched with an entire ceramic bezel, not just the surface. With the announcement of the stainless steel model in 2016, production of the metal bezel finally ended. For 53 years since its first generation, the Daytona has always pursued the highest precision as a racing chronograph. To achieve this, they strengthened the exterior and refined the movement. The history of the Daytona is the evolution of the chronograph itself.
